Athletic Park

Established in 1897 and spanning 39.12 acres, Athletic Park is one of Newton’s most beloved and historic green spaces. With wide-open lawns, mature trees, and abundant wildlife, it’s a favorite destination for everything from peaceful picnics to major community celebrations.

At its core is Fischer Field, a historic stadium and home to Newton High School football, soccer, and other athletic events. Just south lies Kelsch Field, a proud venue for local ball games and the kickoff site for the annual Newton Mexican American Tournament—a long-standing tradition where teams from across the country come to compete, reconnect, and celebrate Newton’s Mexican-American heritage.

The park also features the municipal swimming pool, a summer favorite, and the iconic Mennonite Settler statue, honoring the region’s cultural roots.

Whether you’re catching a game, biking along Sand Creek, playing at the playgrounds, or just soaking in the scenery, Athletic Park is a vibrant space filled with history, community spirit, and something for everyone.
