History of Newton
The City of Newton was incorporated on Feb. 22, 1872, and became a Second Class City on Jan. 22, 1880, and a First Class City on Jan. 1, 1969. The 2024 estimated population of Newton was 18,320.
The City of Newton operates as a Commission-Manager form of government. The City Manager administers the affairs of the City, and the Commission sets the policy for the City (K.S.A. 12-1001 et seq.).
Newton City Hall is located at 201 E. 6th St. and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The City Clerk's office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
