Five Newton teens were arrested after a shooting Wednesday evening in Newton.

The five boys, all believed to be 17, are facing various charges depending on their involvement, including attempted murder, aggravated robbery, illegal possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and drug possession.

The shooting occurred at around 5:30 Wednesday evening at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of East Broadway. One boy was injured and taken by ambulance to a Wichita hospital. He was treated and released and was later arrested.

The investigation has led police to conclude this was a gun and drug trade deal gone wrong. One side brandished a gun, and shots were exchanged between the two groups. This conclusion is based on interviews of all those involved, as well as independent witnesses.

Police worked three scenes overnight: the apartment complex on East Broadway where the shooting occurred, a house near 10th and Oak where the injured teen first fled, and a car crash near Second and High where a fleeing suspect hit a parked car.

Police believe they have detained or interviewed all those involved, and the community is not in danger.
