Semi truck in intersection after hitting traffic light

A semi-truck was involved in an accident on Wednesday that took out a traffic signal at Broadway and Main.

The accident occurred when a pickup traveling southbound on Main ran a red light and hit the diesel tank of the semi, which was westbound on Broadway. The collision caused the semi to hit the traffic light. The pickup bounced off the semi and hit another parked vehicle. The driver of the pickup was injured but thankfully not life-threatening.

City staff are working with our traffic signal supplier to determine the best path forward for repairing or replacing the signal. While our goal is to restore it as quickly as possible, the age of the equipment, availability of replacement parts, and its connection to the downtown traffic signal system present challenges.

In the meantime, the intersection will remain a four-way stop. Please use extra caution when traveling through the area, and be especially mindful of pedestrians, as there is currently no protected pedestrian crossing. Remember:

  • At a four-way stop, the driver reaching the intersection first should be given the right-of-way by other approaching drivers. If more than one vehicle arrives at the same time, the vehicle on the right goes first.
  • You must always yield to pedestrians. Even if they are jaywalking or crossing the street where they should not be, you must stop for them.
  • When turning left, you must yield to oncoming vehicles going straight ahead or turning right.
