Newton to host Safe Routes to School open house Sept. 22

The City of Newton will host a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Open House on Tuesday, September 22, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Fischer Field during the Newton High School soccer games. Community members are invited to learn more about the project and share input.

Newton recently secured a SRTS Planning & Programming Grant through the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), building on community input and previous efforts to identify opportunities for safer ways for students to get to and from school.

Over the next few months, the City will work with KDOT to develop Newton’s first SRTS plan, which will include policy, program and project recommendations to make walking, biking and rolling to school safer and more enjoyable.

Whether students walk, bike, get dropped off, ride the bus or travel another way, community input will help identify how students currently get to and from school and where improvements may be needed.
