Newton Fire/EMS Chief Steve Roberson has announced he is retiring after nearly 32 years with the City of Newton.

Roberson began his career in 1995 with the Newton Ambulance Department, which merged with the Newton Fire Department in 1997 to form Newton Fire/EMS. He rose through the ranks, being promoted to deputy chief in 2016 and chief in 2019.

“I have been truly blessed to be able to do something I loved doing for so many years,” Roberson said. “The support received from the community throughout my career has been second to none. I am humbled to have been allowed to serve the citizens, many of whom are friends and family, in my hometown for 32 years.”

Roberson has been committed to continuing education throughout his career, earning a master’s degree from Pittsburg State University, a bachelor’s degree from Friends University, and associate degrees from Hutchinson Community College and Pratt Community College. He is also a Kansas-licensed registered nurse.

In 2022, he completed the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program, a prestigious education program that only 0.38% of the American fire service has completed.

In 2023, he was awarded the professional designations of Chief Fire Officer and Chief EMS Officer, making him one of only 99 people worldwide at that time to hold both designations.

City Manager Daniela Rivas said Roberson’s dedicated years of service and leadership have made Newton a stronger, safer community.

“We are incredibly grateful for everything Chief Roberson has given to this community and his department,” Rivas said. “We celebrate the legacy he leaves behind and the mark he’s made on everyone who’s worked alongside him. He will be deeply missed. We wish him the best in this new chapter.”

A reception to celebrate Roberson’s retirement will be announced in the coming weeks. His last day at work was Aug. 21, although he will continue to work with the City to ensure a smooth transition.

Deputy Chief Cory Lehman will serve as interim chief. The City will likely launch a search in the next several months for its next Fire/EMS chief.
