We’ve heard it again and again through surveys, conversations, and community forums: people want more ways to connect with their neighbors and community. More chances to gather, meet new people, and build stronger neighborhood ties.

Fresh Air Connections-Block Party Edition is designed to make that easier-helping neighbors come together close to home through simple, meaningful moments like sharing a meal, playing games, and spending time together.

Host a neighborhood block party to bring your community together and create opportunities for connection in a relaxed, informal setting. With prior approval and availability, neighborhoods can even invite City staff, elected officials, Police, and Fire to stop by and connect with residents-no presentations or formal meetings, just genuine conversation and community engagement.

This added layer of connection can help:

  • Build trust and familiarity
  • Open lines of communication
  • Make local government more approachable
  • Strengthen neighborhood relationships

The City will help guide and support up to two neighborhood block parties per month through November (weather permitting), with one party each month designated for requested City staff and elected officials to attend, pending approval.

How the City can help:

  • Street closure application support and permit guidance
  • Tables, trash, and basic setup support when available
  • Event promotion assistance through City communication channels
  • Games, activity kits, and neighborhood gathering resources

Neighborhood organizer responsibilities:

  • Serve as the main neighborhood contact
  • Help organize neighbors and share event details
  • Coordinate volunteers if needed
  • Spearhead setup and cleanup

But- the spirit of connection doesn’t stop there. Residents are welcome to host their own block parties anytime by completing the special event application. Whether you’d like to include City staff or keep it just neighbors, both options are welcome-some gatherings may simply include a member of our Communications team to help support and share your event while keeping the focus on neighborhood connection.

Community organizations, businesses, churches, and local groups interested in participating or contributing are encouraged to reach out: skelly@newtonkansas.com
