At Tuesday’s meeting, the City Commission approved the sale of 3.68 acres of land in Newton Industrial Park to Heartland Audio Visual for its commercial and warehouse operations.

In the purchase agreement, Heartland will pay the City $55,200 for the property at 1901 SE Ninth St. and commits to make certain improvements, including constructing a building of at least 6,000 square feet within 24 months.

The company, which has operations in Wichita and Kansas City, designs and installs audio visual systems for businesses, churches, and other venues. Heartland provided the AV for Newton’s new library, built in 2023-24.

In other action, the City Commission:

  1. Approved a request from the property owner to annex property at 2903 S. Kansas Ave. and set the zoning as R-1 single-family residential.
  2. Approved a 2025 budget amendment for the Meridian Center and set a public hearing for 7 p.m. Dec. 9. The unencumbered cash balance was originally budgeted at $12,972 and actually came in at $53,641. This amendment allows for the use of those funds for the costs of increased business activity and some small equipment replacements.
  3. Approved annual contract extensions for City Manager Daniela Rivas and City Attorney Chris Towle.
  4. Approved 2026 cereal malt beverage licenses.
