City sells industrial land to concrete company

7 p.m. Aug. 12, 2025, Newton City Commission meeting

At Tuesday’s meeting, the City Commission approved the sale of about 4 acres of land in the Kansas Logistics Park to Beran Concrete, which has been leasing the property since February.

Under the lease, Wichita-based Beran Concrete has been operating a concrete batch plant on two lots at the northeast corner of Southeast Ninth and Industrial Drive.

In the purchase agreement, Beran will pay the City $60,000 for the property and make certain improvements, including merging the two lots, constructing a building of at least 3,000 square feet, and installing fencing and gates. If such improvements are not made by the end of 2026, the City will have the option to reacquire the property.

In other action, the City Commission:

  1. Rejected a bid for demolition of 320 N. Main because it was incomplete, and set the date to re-bid the project for 10:30 a.m. Aug. 21.
  2. Amended the school zone ordinance to extend the East First Street zone farther east, remove the mid-day timeframes, and to extend the Slate Creek and Chisholm zone times to 7:15-8:15 a.m. and 2:45-3:45 p.m.
  3. Extended Standridge Color Corp.’s deadline to expand their operations by one year.
  4. Authorized the offering for sale of General Obligation Bonds to finance infrastructure projects for Fox Ridge Addition, the First and Spencer traffic signal project, and Quail Creek Avenue street and water line extension.
  5. Received the Second Quarter Financial Report.
  6. Approved a temporary alcohol permit for Harvey County Now’s 10th anniversary celebration.
  7. Approved a final plat for the Art and Thelma Brackeen Addition at East 14th and Duncan.
