City launches new comprehensive planning process
Published on August 29, 2025
The City of Newton has begun its new comprehensive planning initiative, Newton Next.
The community-centered effort will update the previous plan, ReNewton, which was developed in 2010. The plan will serve as a roadmap for how the city grows, preserves its unique character, and prepares for future needs in areas such as housing, transportation, land use, and economic development.
“This is a chance for Newton to come together and imagine what’s next,” Mayor Rich Stinnett said. “We want every resident, business owner, and community partner to be part of this journey.”
Community members are encouraged to get involved by visiting the project website at NewtonNextPlan.com. There, you can:
- Join the Community Voices Team to provide your insights, assist the Planning Team in the direction and recommendations of the plan, and advocate for the plan.
- Sign up for email updates.
- Mark your calendar for upcoming events and engagement opportunities.
The first events include:
- Visioning Workshop with the Community Voices Team – 6-8 p.m. Oct. 7 at Fire/EMS Station 3, 2520 S. Kansas.
- Public Open House – 6-8 p.m. Oct. 8 at Station 3.
A community survey is also planned in the next few weeks to gather input from residents. A random sample of households will receive a paper survey by mail, and an online version will also be available.
