The City Commission on Tuesday presented the 2025 Yard of the Year award to Roger and Patty Busenitz at 1220 Parkwood Lane. Out of nine nominated yards, the Busenitz property ranked especially high in water conservation and curb appeal.
The Busenitzes have been focused on their landscaping since moving to Newton in 1988. What began as a gravel drive and tree-filled yard has grown into a beautiful and welcoming oasis full of daisies and peonies, creating a colorful retreat. The couple uses water conservation methods, including a 240-gallon rain barrel installation. The Busenitzes have also considered how their landscape affects others through their careful placement of trees and shrubs along busy Southeast 14th Street, maintaining visibility for drivers and neighbors alike.
