Newton's Planning and Community Development efforts are designed to promote strategic growth and development in the city. The various plans, codes and policies, adopted by the Planning Commission and City Commission, provide a framework to guide and coordinate the timing, location and design of development and redevelopment activities. Special attention is given to assuring these activities occur in a manner that can be efficiently provided with urban services, enhance Newton's livability and promote the overall public health, safety and welfare.
The Office of Planning and Community Development administers land use and subdivision regulations designed to encourage the development of safe, accessible and attractive properties and the enhancement of property values in Newton. The office also provides technical assistance on zoning and development matters that go before the Planning Commission and City Commission.
The City of Newton welcomes and encourages public participation in the planning and development process. Most planning and development processes in Newton involve one or more volunteer commissions, task forces or boards appointed by the City Commission. One way to get involved is to apply to join one of these appointed boards.
