City Manager's Update - July 10, 2020

Post Date:07/10/2020 3:22 PM

City website

On Wednesday, the City launched our newly redesigned website! Take a moment to check it out. Huge thanks to Communications Director Erin McDaniel for many months of hard work to make this updated, more user-friendly site a reality!

Pavement overlay project

A pavement overlay project will begin Monday on South Kansas Avenue from 24th Street to the southern city limit. The project will take 4-5 days to complete, weather permitting. The roadway will remain open to traffic throughout. Notices were delivered to the adjacent properties this week in advance of the work.

Meridian Center

Groups continue to be reluctant to commit to booking large events at the Meridian Center; however, General Manager Michael Lunsford reports smaller meeting activity has increased. Additionally, staff are busy planning and creating promotional material for upcoming branded internal events. Michael is partnering with the Bethel College business department to bring in a marketing intern to help with social media and other digital marketing. They are scheduled to start later this month.

Sand Creek Station Golf Course

General Manager Chris Tuohey reports the golf course is gearing up for the Women's State Amateur tournament that will be held Monday and Tuesday, July 13th and 14th. This is the second time we have hosted the state's top-level women's golf event. The course is still seeing moderate traffic flow, mostly in the morning due to the heat wave. June's financial forecast realized the most profitable month to date for 2020 -- cash flow is the strongest it has been in years!

Finally, we are pleased to welcome our new Food and Beverage Manager, Zach Frazier. We are excited to add him to our team!

Sand Creek Summer Daze

The Sand Creek Summer Daze festival has been postponed until 2021 because of COVID-19. For more information and updates, please visit their website

Yard of the Year

On Wednesday, the City opened the 2020 "Yard of the Year" contest. Citizens can nominate their favorite yards at, at City Hall water billing office, or the Newton Public Library through July 24. Nominated yards will be judged based on appearance, creativity, and overall condition, with extra points given for landscapes that require less water.
