Reserve Officers and Cadets

The Newton Police Department Reserve Officer Force is a volunteer unit of citizens who assist the Newton Police Department and the citizens of Newton. Members of the Reserve Officer Force are required to serve a minimum of 10 hours per month. Security assignments, meetings, training and patrol time is included in the officer's monthly time accumulation. Uniforms and duty gear are issued by the Newton Police Department.

The Reserve Officer Force is supervised by the Support Services Commander.  The force currently consists of a reserve Captain, a reserve Lieutenant, reserve officers and cadets.

While working, the Reserve Officers have the same authority as regular police officers.

Reserve officers and cadets also assist in special events throughout the year, such as the county fair, parades, athletic events, etc. Their involvement allows the full-time officers to continue to concentrate on the day-to-day police calls and activities.

Purpose

  • The primary purpose of the Reserve Force is to aid and assist the Newton Police Department in accomplishing the primary police mission, preserve the peace, prevent crime, apprehend criminals and enforce in a fair and impartial manner the ordinances of the City of Newton, the State of Kansas and the United States. Individual Reserve Officers shall be ready at all times to assist the Police Department in periods of national emergency, riots, disasters, catastrophe, or other occasions when additional police officers may be necessary or desirable as determined by the Police Department, except to protect his own job or property. There shall be no financial compensation for the above duties.
  • The secondary purpose of the Reserve Force is to provide, upon request, traffic control, crowd control, and/or any other general security duties for other tax-supported institutions or businesses within the City of Newton.

Becoming a Reserve Officer

If you are interested in becoming a Newton Police Department Reserve Officer, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Must not have committed or been convicted of a felony, drug or alcohol offense, domestic violence offense or weapons-related charge.
  • Must be a member of good standing in the community.

If you met the requirements, the next steps are:

  • Complete an application and submit it to the Newton Police Department.
  • Satisfactorily complete an interview.
  • Satisfactorily complete a polygraph examination.
  • Be approved and recommended by the Reserve Captain.
  • Be appointed by the Support Services Commander and Chief of Police.

Becoming a Cadet

If you a interested in becoming a Newton Police Department Cadet, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a minimum of 16 and a maximum of 20 years of age.
  • Must not have committed or been convicted of a felony, drug or alcohol offense, domestic violence offense or weapons-related charge.
  • Must be a member of good standing in your scholastic setting.
  • Must have written parental consent if under 18.

If you meet the minimum requirements, the next steps are:

  • Complete an application and submit it to Newton Police Department
  • Satisfactorily complete an interview process.
  • Be approved and recommended by the Reserve Lieutenant and Reserve Captain.
  • Be appointed by the Support Services Commander and the Chief of Police.

Cadets may continue to serve until their 21st birthday.
