Fire Marshal Gary Crittenden 

Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, Newton Fire/EMS Inspections/Investigations are responsible for enforcing Fire and Life Safety Codes and determining the origin and cause of fire-related events. Inspections/Investigations performs approximately 800 Fire and Life Safety Inspections on buildings per year. In addition, the section averages 15 fire or arson investigations per year.

In 2017 Newton Fire/EMS sent three members to an 80 hour Fundamentals of Fire Investigation course sponsored by the International Association of Arson Investigators. Upon completing the course all three members gained Origin and Cause Investigator certification. Fire Marshal Crittenden carries Level II Fire Investigator certification which includes law enforcement authority for investigating possible arson and the power to arrest, if necessary. 

The three department members with Origin and Cause Investigator Certification are: Lieutenant Zac Lujano, Firefighter/Paramedic Duane Helms, and Firefighter/Paramedic Bobby Johnson.
