The Newton-North Newton Planning Commission makes recommendations to the respective governing bodies on issues relating to zoning, subdivision plats, sign regulations and various other matters impacting the development of the Newton-North Newton area. The commission also serves as the Board of Zoning Appeals to hear and rule on applications for variances and exceptions as required under the zoning regulations, and to hear and rule on appeals from determinations of the zoning administrator.
The Planning Commission is a nine-member body appointed by the governing bodies of Newton and North Newton in April of each year. Members serve staggered three-year terms.
The Planning Commission meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Commission Chambers on the third floor of Newton City Hall.

Persons or businesses interested in submitting an application for a Plat, Zoning Amendment, or Planned Unit Development (PUD) should consult with the Planning Department before beginning the application process. The Planning Department can be reached at 316-284-6001.

*Submission Deadline -- applications and all required supporting documents, including property ownership lists and preliminary plats, must be received by the Planning Department, no later than 5 p.m. at the 3rd floor reception desk, City Hall, 201 E. Sixth St., Newton.
*Meeting/Public Hearing -- all applications will be considered by the Newton-North Newton Planning Commission during a regular meeting. For those applications that require a public hearing, the public hearing will be conducted during the regular meeting.
