MISSION
Provide an environmentally sound wastewater collection and treatment system in compliance with state and federal regulations.
WASTE WATER COLLECTION
Four full-time employees staff the wastewater collection operations, which maintain more than 100 miles of wastewater lines and eight lift stations.
WASTE WATER COLLECTION EMPLOYEES:
- Repair and replace broken sewer mainlines.
- High pressure jet clean the entire collection system annually.
- Televise 1/3 of the sewer lines annually.
- Plan for solutions to inflow/infiltration problems.
- Check and maintain eight lift stations twice weekly.
- Respond to backup reports.
- Repair manholes.
- Have two employees on call for 24-hour service.
- Perform utility locates.
TRAINING AND CERTIFICATIONS
Wastewater collection has two certified State of Kansas operators, including one class IV wastewater certified operator and one class II wastewater certified operator. Certified operators requirements include 10 hours of certified training by a KDHE certified school per year. All of the employees in wastewater collection are certified in confined space and trenching and shoring and participate in monthly safety training.

WASTE WATER TREATMENT
Five full-time employees staff the wastewater treatment operations. They are responsible for cleaning up wastewater to meet Kansas Department of Health and Environment requirements. The clean water is then released into a receiving stream, Slate Creek, which enters into Sand Creek.

WASTE WATER TREATMENT EMPLOYEES:
- Collect influent and effluent samples daily.
- Analyze samples in lab for BOD, TSS, ammonia, fecal coliform.
- Operate plant and make adjustments using lab information.
- Maintain facility grounds.
- Maintain pumps and motors through monthly preventative maintenance program.
- Monitor plant 24 hours a day through SCADA system.
- Maintain and clean facility buildings.
- Haul and spread sludge on city-owned farm land.
- Submit monthly monitoring report to state.
TRAINING CERTIFICATIONS
Wastewater treatment has four certified State of Kansas operators, including one class IV wastewater certified operator, one class III wastewater certified operator and two class II wastewater certified operators. The class IV operator is also a certified class I laboratory operator. All of the wastewater treatment employees are also certified in confined space and trenching and shoring and participate in monthly safety training.
