Maintenance Facility Enhancements at City Service Center
On Tuesday, November 26, 2002 the City will "officially" unveil its maintenance
facility improvements at the Service Center, located at 1100 S. Kansas. The old
Quonset hut, which was actually an old building that blew away at the Newton City/County
airport in a windstorm back in the late 1950’s, has been replaced by a beautiful
new building. In addition, the sign shop has been renovated, and a new pre-cast
wash bay has been constructed.
The improvements at the Service Center were long overdue. The previous building
was structurally unsound, it did not meet fire codes, and it did not have a female
locker area. The bottom line was that it was in serious need of replacement.
Now, the Public Works Department has facilities it can be proud of. Public Works
Director, Suzanne Loomis, said, "We are thankful to receive this improvement that
will allow for more efficient operations and proper training of our staff."
(Pictures # 1, 4) – Utility Maintenance Building– This building has a work shop
area, a training room that can be used for activities like mandatory training required
for water and wastewater certifications, and male and female ADA accessible restrooms.
This building also houses all of the City’s water and sewer equipment that requires
indoor storage. Much of this equipment is high tech, and some of the equipment holds
water. If not stored properly, the equipment could freeze and break.

(Picture #2) – Wash Bay– This new, pre-cast wash bay structure was constructed
large enough to pull all City equipment into, with the exception of the Fire Department’s
ladder truck. The wash bay meets all current EPA and KDHE wash water and run-off
standards.

(Picture #3) – Sign Shop Renovation– An existing storage building was renovated
to serve as a new sign shop for development of street signs, construction of traffic
control barricades, and a place to store street paint. (The paint that is used to
mark the streets and curbs is considered a hazardous material, especially in the
large quantities that the City requires, therefore special storage requirements
are necessary to meet fire codes.)
