Highlights of work performed in 2006
- Collected 4,313 tons of municipal solid waste; a decrease of 10% over the previous year.
- Collected 1,832 tons of residential recyclables; up 32% over last year.
- Added mixed paper to the recycling stream and began co-mingling all paper beginning March 1. Ended the magazine/catalog/phonebook collection on the first pickup of the month.
- The bulky item pickup service had 80 orders with revenues of $2,013.
- The rolloff dumpster rental had 50 orders with revenues of $7,200. Rental activity has quadrupled in the last two years.
- The “Free Landfill” program dispensed 3986 coupons with 2368 redeemed for a total expenditure of $28,379.
- Provided sanitation services to community events including Taste of Newton, Chisholm Trail Festival and others.
- Wrote 3,098 violations of the sanitation code, an average of 258 per month. This is a 20% increase over the previous year.
- Began evaluating collection alternatives to improve service and economy.
- Sent 251 help letters with info packets to non-compliant residents.
- Forwarded 51 cases to the environmental control office for repeated violations of the sanitation code.
