Was there a note on your trash cart?

There was a note on my trash cart, and all/some of my garbage/recyclables were left behind.  What does this mean?

Your note will have a checkmark or an X next to one of the following categories:

  COLLECTION POINT
  • Improper positioning of containers – Usually means that your trash cart was not positioned within reach of the mechanical arm on the collection vehicle and the lid facing the correct direction, or there was something obstructing the automated dumping process. It could also mean that your recycle bins or any extra bags that were set out were placed too far from the curb or on the street.
  • Items placed out not approved for collection – One or more items you placed out for collection was either too bulky to load onto the truck, or was an item or material that cannot be disposed of at the transfer station according to regulations. Examples are large furniture, appliances, hazardous materials or bags of leaves or grass clippings.
  • Use of unapproved containers – We cannot pick up refuse that is not in a city-provided container. The automated collection system does not work with other types of trash cans, barrels, buckets, baskets or crates. Place excess trash in plastic bags and set them on the ground at the collection point, ensuring at least four feet of clearance around the trash cart. We can only accept extra bags on an infrequent basis.
  • No container used – If you are a current customer, you should use the city-provided containers. Trash or recyclables that are set out loosely or in piles, or even bagged is more likely to become a bigger nuisance for you and your neighbors.
  • Collection point littered – If you crush your cans with the lids inside, and especially your plastic bottles, it is less likely they will blow out of your bin on a breezy day. If you stack the recycling bins inside each other with the papers bin on the bottom, they are even better protected. Bag the trash inside your trash cart and it will not blow away if the lid opens in the wind.
  • Frequent excess trash outside container – Recommend another rollout trash cart – Our system is designed for automated collection of your refuse. The collector has noticed that you frequently set out more trash than will fit inside the trash cart with the lid closed. He is not required to pick up the extra trash on a regular or frequent basis. We strongly encourage you to call us and order another trash cart or the excess trash may not be collected. There is an additional fee for the extra container.
  • Containers not returned to normal storage location within 24 hours after collection – Refuse and recycling containers must be taken from the curb to a storage location behind the front line of your house. This can be the backyard, garage, or side of your house. You may put your containers out for collection anytime after 5 p.m. the night before your collection day.
  ROLLOUT TRASH CART
  • Too many recyclables in trash – We do not examine the contents of every trash cart, but crews are looking for compliance with the mandatory recycling ordinance. They may notice that you rarely put out your recycling bins, or they may see or even hear recyclables rattling in your trash and will investigate. Certain materials designated as “recyclable” have been banned from residential trash and must be separated out before we can service your residence.
  • Materials in container not approved for landfill – We cannot pick up household hazardous waste, lawn & garden waste like leaves and grass clippings or construction/remodeling debris with your regular household trash, and crews will not sort it. Your trash cart probably contained a substantial amount of one or more of these kinds of material. Call us if you need more information on discarding materials not approved for disposal at the Harvey County Transfer Station.
  RECYCLING BIN
  • Items not clean – All items must be clean in order to be recycled. Bottles and cans should be rinsed so that no food residue remains. Dirty aluminum foil should be discarded in your trash. Soiled paper and cardboard likewise should be put in your trash.
  • Items in bin that cannot be recycled – Most clean paper and cardboard is recyclable. However waxed containers, pizza boxes (because of grease), tissues, napkins, plates & cups, coffee filters and similar materials are not recycled in our community. Only #1 and #2 plastic bottles and jugs, glass food and beverage bottles and jars, aluminum and steel food and beverage cans, and clean aluminum foil are recyclable. Do not include items like motor oil bottles, plastics with other numbers on them, plastic grocery or shopping bags or aerosol cans. Crews are not required to sort non-recyclable materials out of your bins, however if you find that part of the contents was taken, it probably means that the remaining portion is not recyclable in our program. This is a form of recycling education.
  • Items in bin improperly sorted – Usually means that you have mixed the paper/cardboard stream with the glass/metal/plastic stream. Residents must separate recyclables into two streams. Our collection crews simply do not have the time to sort. This is the only way recyclables can be delivered to the recycling center.
