Recycling Program

i12The City of Newton uses an integrated collection strategy to provide residential solid waste and recycling services to the community. Similar collection systems are now used in many communities throughout the nation and have proven to be a dependable and economical solution to the problem of rising collection costs. By using the system, you can expect to receive the best possible refuse and recycling service at an economical cost.
WHAT TO RECYCLE:

Glass
  • Only bottles and jars please.
  • All colors are accepted.
  • Rinse so that no food residue remains.
  • You may leave labels on.
  • For the safety of collection crews, please don't include broken glass.

Plastic

  • #1 and #2 plastics only please.
  • Only bottles and jugs please.
  • Rinse so that no food residue remains.
  • You may leave labels on.
  • Flatten plastics to keep them from blowing away and to conserve space.

Aluminum Steel

  • Food and beverage containers only please.
  • Rinse so that no food residue remains.
  • You may leave labels on.
  • Flatten cans or pinch the end to hold the lid inside and conserve space.
  • Aluminum foil and foil food and pie tins are accepted only if clean.
  • Please don't include aerosol cans or soiled foil.

Newspapers, Magazines, Catalogs, & Phonebooks

  • Include all inserts.
  • Please include only if they are clean and dry.

Corrugated Cardboard

  • Please include only if it is clean and dry.
  • Flatten boxes.
  • Tape and staples are acceptable.
  • Don’t include waxy boxes or pizza boxes.

Pasteboard/Chipboard Please include:

  • Cereal boxes and beverage cartons
  • Shoe boxes
  • Gift boxes
  • Cardboard and pasteboard tubes

Mixed Paper Please include:

  • Office and computer paper
  • Envelopes (with or without windows)
  • Slick ads and brochures
  • Junk mail
  • Shredded documents (may be bagged)
  • Paper bags
  • Note pads and spiral notebooks
  • File folders and cardstock
  • Books (hardback or paperback)
  • Greeting cards
  • Gift wrap
  • Paper egg cartons
  • Please do not include wax paper or wax-coated containers, tissues, napkins, plates, cups, coffee filters, or candy wrappers.

HOW TO RECYCLE:

Prepare items as instructed above and then combine the glass, plastic, aluminum and steel cans into one City-provided recycling bin. Put the newspaper, cardboard, magazines, and other paper products in the other recycling bin. You can stack the papers bin under the containers bin to keep them from blowing away. Place both bins at the curb next to your trash cart on your trash day. (Click here if you don't know when your trash day is.)

If you are in need of extra recycling bins, they are available for a one time charge of $6.00 at City Hall, 201 E. 6th St, M-F, 8 am-5 pm.

RECYCLING TIPS

  • All unacceptable items will be left in your container, so if you have any doubt as to whether an item is recyclable, call us at 284-6070 for clarification.
  • Rinse, then recycle. Please remove food residue from all cans, bottles and jars.
  • Flatten plastic bottles to keep them from blowing away and to conserve space.
  • Please don't place recyclables in plastic bags.
  • Store bins in a safe location to avoid theft or damage.
  • Scavenging recyclables is against the law. Report offenders to the Sanitation Division or 911 immediately.
