RESIDENTIAL REFUSE COLLECTION
The City of Newton utilizes an integrated refuse and recycling collection system which is designed to provide curbside trash collection in an efficient, sanitary, and safe way.
Each single family household receives a rollout cart to be used for trash, and two recycling bins. These containers are designed to work with our collection trucks. (See information on refuse containers further down this page.)
Use the bins to separate selected materials from your trash. (Which items? Click here for more recycling information.)
City crews will collect your trash and recyclables together, once each week. Have your containers out at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day (When is this? Click here to see a map). What to put in your trash cart:
- Regular household trash (except for items you can recycle)
- Small appliances
- Small tree twigs (You can also bundle tree branches into less than 4' lengths, and set them on the ground beside your cart.)
What NOT to put in your trash cart:
- Recyclable Materials
- Grass clippings
- Leaves and other yard wastes
- Household Hazardous Waste
- Items too large to fit into the cart
- Regulated Medical Waste
- Rocks, Concrete or dirt
- Construction, Remodeling or Demolition debris
Placement for Collection:
- Place all trash in your cart.
- Place your cart at the curb with at least 4 feet of clearance from bins, trees, mailboxes, etc.
- Your cart should be facing the street with the lid fully closed.
- Excess trash may be placed in a plastic bag 4 feet from your cart if it is on an infrequent basis.
- Roll your cart to the curb between 5:00 pm the day before your collection and 7:00 am the day of your collection.
- Place the recycling bins at the curb 4 feet from the cart.
- Please remove your cart and bins from the curb within 24 hours after pick-up.
REFUSE CONTAINERS
Each single family household receives a 90 gallon rollout cart to be used for trash, and two 14 gallon recycling bins.
These containers are city property, but assigned for use at your address.
The containers are designed to work with our collection trucks.
Carts have wheels for easy handling, and an attached lid that helps keep out insects and stray animals.
Although the 90 gallon cart should be more than large enough for the average Newton household, an extra cart is available for a $13.13 monthly fee.
Smaller carts are available for those who have trouble maneuvering the large ones--just call us at (316) 284-6070.
Cart and Bin Care
- Only put acceptable items in your containers.
- Keep your cart in a safe place to avoid tampering or theft.
- Avoid overfilling the cart. The semi-automated system works best if the lid is completely closed.
- Do not place more than 200 pounds of trash in your cart.
- Rinse your cart out with a garden hose as needed.
Advantages of Semi-Automated Collection
- Because city employees no longer must lift refuse containers, back injuries are virtually eliminated.
- Because each container is the same type and color and trash is not placed loose and in bags, neighborhoods look significantly better on collection day.
- The containers are easier to use than most containers. They will not easily tip over, will not blow away, don't have separate lids to get lost, have big wheels for easy rolling, and hold the weekly trash of an average family of four.
