Newton-North Newton Planning Commission

The Newton-North Newton Planning Commission is a nine-member body appointed by the governing bodies of Newton and North Newton in April of each year. Members serve staggered three-year terms commencing on May 1 in the year of appointment. Vacancies are filled by appointment by the governing body that appointed the vacating member, with such appointment being for the unexpired term of the vacating member.

The planning commission makes recommendations to the respective governing bodies on issues relating to zoning, subdivision plats, sign regulations and various other matters impacting the development of the Newton-North Newton area. The commission also serves as the Board of Zoning Appeals to hear and rule on applications for variances and exceptions as required under the zoning regulations, and to hear and rule on appeals from determinations of the zoning administrator.

Updated 7-7-2009
The City Commission adopted Ordinance No. 4035-92 on February 19, 1992 which restructures the Planning Commission combining it with the Board of Zoning Appeals. Six members are appointed by the City of Newton and three members are appointed by the City of North Newton for three year terms. They meet on the first Monday of each month at 7:30 P.M. in the City Commission Room. Duties include those set forth in K.S.A. 12-741 et.seq. and K.S.A. 12-759. The City Attorney of Newton is the staff person.
