Post Date:03/06/2020 5:36 PM

Harvey County Safety Fair

Saturday, March 7th will be the first Harvey County Safety Fair held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chisholm Trail Center. The event coincides with Severe Weather Awareness Week and has topics and activities for all ages, benefiting those just beginning their preparedness steps and those who are experts in the field. Events include demonstrations, speaker presentations, exhibits, family activities, food trucks and more. Newton Fire/EMS and Police Departments will be participating along with other public safety entities from Harvey County and the State.

Library Project

Some of the Library Project Committee members met yesterday with Swanson House to prepare the Library for submission of the Kansas Community Service Tax Credit Application. This must be submitted by May 31, 2020. The group also spent time developing a list of 63 agencies that could provide community support letters for the application. The group also started on a donor list; 69 individuals were identified for the silent phase of the fundraising campaign. More work and discussion will occur with fundraising at upcoming committee meetings.

Final project concepts will be shared with the Library Board and City Commission in a joint work session meeting on April 28th at the Library, prior to the regular Commission meeting.

Sand Creek Dam

The project contractor, Dondlinger & Sons, has removed the rubber bladder, and the bolts and clamping plates look to be in good condition. Engineering staff is working through issues with pressure control valves and other items with the supplier for manufacturing and delivery this summer.

Law Enforcement Center Remodel

Unforeseen sewer line issues are nearing resolution this week so the project can get back on track. The tentative plan is to move Police operations to City Hall on March 16th.
