Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting

Newton’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for 2018 has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management. This is the 30th year in a row that Newton has received this prestigious recognition!

LEC Reconstruction Project

The majority of the Police Department and public access to their staff will be moving to the lower level of City Hall during renovations at the Law Enforcement Center. The move is tentatively planned for the week of March 2.

Newton Housing Authority

An invitation was mailed yesterday to the Executive Director and Board Chair of the Newton Housing Authority inviting them to present to the City Commission at the Feb. 28 work session, beginning at 6 p.m.

Recycling Update

As of Thursday (the 6th), 1,551 utility customers have returned "yes" responses for the voluntary recycling program. About 6,900 letters were mailed, which means about 22% so far have opted to recycle. We will have a more in-depth update on Tuesday at the City Commission meeting.

Newton Fire/EMS Reserve Program

Six reserve officers have now completed their four-week training academy and are now eligible to sign up for ride time with the Fire/EMS Department. Over the past four weeks the reserves have been immersed in training that covered a variety of topics including patient moving and lifting, airway, vascular access, CPR, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) operations, and incident rehab.
