Next phase of Old Main sewer project to begin
Old Main Street will be closed from Southeast 8th to Southeast 10th Street beginning Monday, Oct. 28 as the second phase of a sanitary sewer line upsizing project begins.
Residents in the affected blocks will have to park on side streets and walk in. On trash/recycle collection days, residents should put out containers as usual and City crews will walk in to collect materials.
In phase 2, families will need to access South Breeze Elementary and Newton Bible Christian School from the south on Old Main or from the east on Southeast 10th. They can then exit southbound onto Old Main or back eastbound on 10th.
The contractor, Nowak Construction, is reaming out and enlarging the sewer line that runs down the middle of Old Main. Much of the work is underground, but sanitary sewer service line connections to the main have to be dug up and reconnected to the new pipe.
Discharge to the sewer main will continue through construction, and residents should not see any disruption in service.
In phase 3, estimated to begin in mid-November, Old Main will be closed from 8th Street to the Slate Creek Bridge.
Sewer service excavations will be done along the edge of the street and temporarily patched with gravel material to allow for traffic. Permanent pavement repairs will be made by the sub-contractor, Cornejo & Sons, at the end of the project.
