Kids fishing derby set for May 11
The first Newton Fishing Derby is planned for Saturday, May 11 at Spring Lake Park, 110 Spring Lake Drive.
The event is hosted by City of Newton employees with assistance from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.
The event is free for kids 15 and under, but registration is required at www.newtonkansas.com/fishingderby. The deadline is April 30.
The pond will be stocked with perch and catfish. Bait and equipment will be provided for those who need it. Prizes are guaranteed for all pre-registered participants, and a special prize is offered for catching Kirby, the albino catfish.
Parents who want to assist their children will need a valid fishing license. All regulations must be followed.
Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m., and fishing will begin at 9 a.m. The awards ceremony is planned for 12:30 p.m. Food trucks will be on-site to purchase lunch.
