Law Enforcement Center remodel moving forward

Post Date:12/20/2018 5:29 PM

The Newton City Commission and Harvey County Commission approved plans and specifications for renovation of the joint Law Enforcement Center at a special joint meeting Thursday.

Among the upgrades included:

  • New heating and air conditioning system, units and ductwork.
  • Restroom renovations, including one new accessible restroom on the Police side.
  • Renovation of the Police lobby space to accommodate separate public waiting rooms.
  • New entry stairs and ADA ramp.
  • New windows, doors, carpet and paint.
  • 17 new parking spaces on the south side of Seventh Street.
  • Renovation of the building on the south side of Seventh Street for fitness equipment and quartermaster storage.
  • Renovation of the Police side to improve security, better organize space and accommodate a few additional offices.

Cost for the renovation is estimated at $3.1 million, with the City responsible for about $2.1 million and the County contributing about $1 million.

The project will go out for bid at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 6. Bids will be awarded based on the lowest bid and best timeframe, or any combination thereof.

During construction, law enforcement operations will need to continue, so some functions may be temporarily moved to other available City and County offices to keep construction time to a minimum.
