The Rundown – New rental car service coming to Newton airport

Post Date:04/12/2017 4:23 PM

The Rundown is prepared by the City of Newton Public Information Office to summarize the City Commission meeting and does not represent official Commission minutes.

7 p.m. April 11, 2017, Newton City Commission meeting

At Tuesday night’s meeting, the City Commission approved a lease agreement with Enterprise Rent-A-Car to provide rental car services at Newton City/County Airport.

Enterprise will operate out of office space in the terminal building, with two full-time employees. The 60-month lease is for $150 a month, plus a 10 percent fee on gross receipts from deplaning airport passengers.

Airport Manager Brian Palmer noted that Enterprise shares a parent company with Alamo and National Car Rental, so airport customers will have the option to choose from among the three services.

Community recognition

The Commission honored photographer Kelly Nachtigal, whose photo “Wonderland” was winner of the 2016 Best of Newton Photo Contest and made it to the Final Four in the League of Kansas Municipalities’ Hometown Showdown Photo Contest. The photo will be featured in the next issue of the Kansas Government Journal.

The Commission also recognized members of the Chisholm Middle School Science Olympiad Team, which recently competed at the State tournament.

In other action, the City Commission:

  1. Discussed moving Commission meetings to 6 p.m. instead of the usual 7 p.m. Commissioners said they wanted additional input from residents about what time is most convenient for them.
  2. Accepted a donation of property near U.S. 50 and Anderson that includes two detention ponds built during construction of the new highway interchange. The ponds possibly could be used in the future as backup irrigation sources for Sand Creek Station Golf Course.
  3. Approved a request to close Athletic Park circle on July 22 for Newton Rec Commission’s Community Fun Run.
  4. Appointed Jordan Miller to the Newton/North Newton Planning Commission and Marjorie Gilbert to the Newton Housing Authority.
