Harvey County issues burn ban
A burn ban is in effect for Harvey County through March 13.
Due to extreme fire danger produced by dry conditions, high winds, and an abundance of combustible fuels, the Board of Harvey County Commissioners approved a countywide burn banduring its meeting Monday morning.
During this burn ban, no outdoor burning is allowed throughout Harvey County.
“The fire danger is extreme in our area right now,” said Newton Fire/EMS Chief Scott Metzler. “We’ve had crews from Harvey County fire departments deployed to assist the firefighting efforts in Reno County for the past few days, and our resources are stretched thin. In these conditions, even a small fire could prove disastrous.”
The burn ban prohibits prescribed burning of fields, fence rows, trash and debris and open fires and campfires. Metzler also reminded residents to be cautious about the disposal of cigarettes and other smoking material.
The burn ban will be evaluated again on March 13 at the next county commission meeting.
